Preschoolers are naturally curious. They absolutely love to explore the world around them. Integrating science activities into your daycare or preschool curriculum can help to spark this curiosity and set the foundation for a lifelong love of learning. Plus, it’s a lot of fun! While you’re having fun learning, don’t forget to record the activities in your child’s digital activity journal. Here are some engaging preschool science activities that are sure to captivate those young minds.
Fill the container with water and gather the children around. Introduce the objects one by one and have the children predict whether each item will sink or float. You can also record the guesses to begin with charting skills. Once the kids make their guesses, place the object in the water and wait to see the result. This simple activity is so wonderful because not only is it fun, it also teaches the basic principles of buoyancy. Kids also begin to develop observational skills. If you take it a step further by tallying up the guesses, you can also work some match skills into this science activity for preschoolers!
Place the container on a tray or another surface that can handle some mess. Add a few spoonfuls of baking soda to the container, followed by a couple of drops of food coloring (if desired) and a squirt of dish soap. Finally, pour in vinegar and watch the mini volcano bubble over! This super fun science experiment introduces kids to chemical reactions in a visually exciting way. Mini volcano eruptions are the perfect engaging preschooler science activity!

This experience starts the day or night before. Fill the ice cube trays with water and add different food colorings to each compartment. Freeze overnight. The next day, provide each child with a clear cup or bowl and several colored ice cubes. As the ice melts, the colors mix together. This science activity teaches kids all about colour blending and states of matter. Preschoolers will be fascinated by how primary colors can create secondary colors right before their eyes.
Take the children on a bug hunt around a nearby garden or park. If you have an area on site, even better! Equip the kids with magnifying glasses and small containers to catch (and later release) bugs. Encourage them to observe the bugs closely and draw what they see. This great preschooler science activity fosters a love for nature while also helping develop observational skills. Remember to regularly remind the children to be gentle and respectful towards the insects.
Create a weather chart to track daily weather conditions. Each day, have the children observe the weather and mark it on the chart using stickers or drawings. Use this opportunity to discuss the different types of weather and what they mean. This activity not only teaches basic meteorology but also fosters daily observation and recording skills. To add to the activity, think about incorporating a weather wheel. You can easily make your own – The Crafty Chicks has a great simple DIY idea.
Give each child a small pot or cup and help them fill it with soil. Let them choose a seed of their choice to plant, and then have them water it. Once seeds are carefully planted and watered, place the pots in a sunny spot in the room. Incorporate observing and watering the plants into your daily routine. As the seeds grow, children learn about plant life cycles as well as the importance of care and nourishment. You can take this a step further by transplanting the plants to an outdoor garden, if possible. If so, make the end goal to eat a yummy salad or veggies you’ve grown with your own two hands.

Science doesn’t have to be complicated to be fun. These engaging preschool science activities are simple yet effective ways to introduce young children to scientific concepts. They all combine learning and fun, ensuring that children’s natural curiosity is nurtured. Plus, they are fantastic options for educators looking to enrich their daycare programs. Use ChildFriendly’s Learning Module to plan out these activities, and then share them with parents in the parent portal.
Roll up your sleeves, gather your supplies, and get ready for some scientific fun!
