In a bustling daycare, there’s never a dull moment. Tiny feet pitter-patter along the colorful tiles, laughter echoes down hallways, and the smell of fresh crayons fills the air. But amidst the joyous chaos, there lurks a potential danger that daycare providers must be ever vigilant against—food allergies. Protecting children with allergies in childcare and school settings is crucial. Enter Sabrina’s Law.
Sabrina’s Law is named after Sabrina Shannon. Sabrina was an inspirational Canadian teenager who advocated for other teens and children with food allergies. Tragically, Sabrina suffered a fatal anaphylactic reaction during her first year of high school in 2003.
Enacted January 1, 2006, the Ontario government passed Bill 3: An Act to Protect Anaphylactic Pupils – Sabrina’s Law, which applies to all publicly funded schools in Ontario. Sabrina’s Law requires that every school board in Ontario establish and maintain an anaphylaxis policy to help students with serious allergies. It also requires that schools create individual plans for each student at risk of anaphylaxis. As a result of Sabrina’s Law, hundreds of thousands of individualized plans and educational programs have been created in schools across North America and around the world.
Sabrina’s Law was the first legislation of its kind in the world and has served as a model for legislation in other provinces and territories, as well as in the United States.

Sabrina’s Law is both comprehensive and compassionate, encapsulating several crucial elements. These elements also help guide childcare centers on how to manage and respond to allergies.
Daycare centers must create and implement individual Allergy Management Plans for children with known allergies. These plans detail specific triggers, preventive strategies, and emergency responses tailored to each child’s needs. Strategies that reduce the risk of exposure to anaphylactic causative agents in classrooms and common school areas. There are also needs to be a communication plan for distributing information on life-threatening allergies to parents and employees.
Staff must receive annual training on recognizing and responding to allergic reactions. This training includes hands-on instruction on administering epinephrine through auto-injectors, transforming daycare workers into vigilant guardians equipped to handle emergencies confidently.

The law mandates clear, accessible emergency protocols. Daycares are required to have epinephrine auto-injectors on-site and designate staff members who are trained in their use. Quick response times are critical; every second counts in preventing a tragedy.
Consider this: about one in every 13 children has a food allergy. That means, in an average-sized daycare class, at least one child is at risk of exposure to potentially fatal allergens. Without proper safeguards, the unthinkable can occur.
Creating an allergy management policy is crucial. It reassures parents that their children are safe and protected, allowing them to focus on their workday with peace of mind. Moreover, it empowers daycare staff with the knowledge and tools they need, fostering a proactive culture of safety.
Embracing Sabrina’s Law begins with awareness and a commitment to the well-being of every child. Here’s how you can get started:
Collaborate with parents and healthcare providers to create detailed allergy action plans for affected children. Ensure these plans are easily accessible to all staff members.
Invest in regular training sessions for your staff. Role-playing scenarios and hands-on practice with epinephrine auto-injectors can make a world of difference during an emergency.

Maintain open lines of communication between staff, parents, and healthcare providers. Use daycare management software to document and share important information, ensuring everyone stays informed and prepared.
Consider implementing a nut-free policy or designating specific areas as allergen-free. While not foolproof, these measures can significantly reduce the risk of accidental exposure.
By integrating these guidelines into our daily routines, we ensure that our daycares remain safe havens for all children. As we navigate the intricacies of allergy management, we’re not just protecting lives; we’re creating an inclusive, nurturing environment where every child can thrive.
So, let’s march forward with hearts full of compassion, equipped with the knowledge and tools to keep our daycares safe. After all, every child’s laughter is a reminder of why we do what we do—and there’s nothing more precious than that.
