Tips from operators

What centers that use this well do differently

Learned the hard way across 3,000 child care spaces — and from the directors and educators who join our Lunch & Learns and Learning Labs.

Step up frequency during illness

When a stomach bug hits, move to hourly sanitising and note it on the sheet — it is exactly what public health will ask about.

Keep gloves at the change table, not the sink

Supplies need to be within reach without stepping away from the child.

Child-height checks

Handles, flush buttons and tap levers at child height are the highest-touch surfaces in the building.

How often should child care bathrooms be cleaned?

At least daily, with sanitising of high-touch surfaces multiple times a day; change tables after every use. Public health guidance in your region sets the minimum. This checklist records one check per task per day, so note any extra rounds beside the box.

What is the difference between cleaning and sanitising?

Cleaning removes dirt with soap and water; sanitising reduces germs with an approved product left for its contact time. Bathrooms need both, in that order.

Do I need this if we have a cleaning contractor?

Yes — the contractor covers closing, but daytime checks and diapering areas are on your staff. Keep both records.

Can I combine it with the room checklist?

You can, but separate sheets are easier to file and to show an inspector.
