Tips from operators

What centers that use this well do differently

Learned the hard way across 3,000 child care spaces — and from the directors and educators who join our Lunch & Learns and Learning Labs.

Set your weather thresholds in writing

Wind chill, heat and UV limits should be written down and posted by the door, not decided there each morning.

Keep a hazard kit by the exit

Gloves, a bag and a small rake make the morning walk a two-minute job.

Photograph equipment quarterly

A dated photo set is useful evidence of condition when insurers or inspectors ask.

Is a daily playground check required?

Most licensing regulations require outdoor play spaces to be inspected for hazards before use, and many reference a national playground standard (CSA Z614 in Canada, ASTM/CPSC in the US) for equipment. This checklist gives you a dated record of daily, weekly and monthly checks; confirm the exact requirements with your licensing body.

What surfacing depth do I need?

It depends on equipment height and the material — typically 150–300 mm (6–12 in) of loose fill under climbing equipment. Check the standard your licensing body references. The monthly surface maintenance task is the time to top up or replace material.

What if I find a hazard I cannot fix today?

Cordon it off, tell the director and keep children away from it. The checklist has tick boxes but no notes area, so record the hazard and the fix date in your maintenance log or an incident report.

Does this cover outings and walks?

No — this is for your own outdoor space. Use a separate outing checklist (headcounts, first-aid kit, emergency contacts) for trips off-site.
