How to use it

Four steps to put it to work this week

  1. 1
Write in the month and post the gridPrint page one for each month and put it where the person cleaning will see it.
  2. 2
Keep the reference page beside itPage two tells staff exactly what ‘Surfaces’ or ‘Deep Disinfection’ means, so the check mark means the same thing to everyone.
  3. 3
Check off tasks as they are doneMark the box for each daily task, and the weekly and monthly rows when those are completed. Agree who does what — unowned tasks do not happen.
  4. 4
Record maintenance and file itWrite loose fixtures or damage in the comments box, pass them on, and file the sheet with the room and bathroom checklists. Together they are your facility hygiene record.

Tips from operators

What centers that use this well do differently

Learned the hard way across 3,000 child care spaces — and from the directors and educators who join our Lunch & Learns and Learning Labs.

Start at the door

Families judge cleanliness in the first ten seconds at the entrance. Start the daily inspection there.

Keep custodial and staff tasks separate

If a contractor cleans nightly, list what they do so your staff know what is left for them.

Review after a licensing visit

Write whatever the inspector noticed in the comments box and make it part of the routine. The checklist should reflect real findings.

What common areas do inspectors check?

Entrances, hallways, shared play spaces, kitchens and washrooms — with attention to high-touch surfaces, storage of hazardous products and general repair. The checklist is organised by task rather than by room, so walk each shared space as you work through it.

Who should own shared-space cleaning?

Whoever is there last, in most centers — but write it down. The sheet has no owner column, so note names or roles on it or in your cleaning policy, because ‘everyone’ means no one.

How do I handle a shared building?

If you share a facility (a church hall, a school), agree the split in writing with the landlord and note which tasks are yours.

Is there a digital version?

A custom checklist assigned to a role in your child care platform works well; ChildFriendly Pro’s form builder lets you assign it daily with time-stamped completion.
