What’s inside

Three nature activities, each adapted for three age groups

  • Explore – Nature Discovery BinsShallow bins or trays of leaves, sticks, pinecones, rocks and grass, with magnifying glasses, small containers and tweezers for older groups. The purpose given is observation skills, early science, sensory exploration and language development.
  • Create – Nature Mark MakingProcess art using leaves, sticks and pinecones with paint or water on paper, indoors or outside. The setup guide says to model pressing, dragging and rolling, and to “focus on process, not product”.
  • Build – Loose Parts Nature ConstructionA defined space on a mat or table with sticks, rocks, pinecones and small logs or blocks, and the invitation “What can you create?” The purpose given is problem-solving, planning and engineering thinking.
  • Age Group AdaptationsEach activity is adapted for 12–18 months, 19 months–under 3 years and 3–4 years, with a focus list for each. The Explore section also lists materials and educator language, such as “What’s different?” and “Why do you think that?”
  • Family Update wordingShort paragraphs to send home, for example: “Today children investigated natural materials, comparing textures and features.” Eight of the nine activity and age-group combinations have one.

How to use it

Four steps to put it to work this week

  1. 1
Pick one activity to startExplore, Create and Build are independent. Choose the one that fits your space and the materials you can collect this week.
  2. 2
Gather natural materialsThe guide lists leaves, sticks, pinecones, rocks and grass. Check everything for size and sharp edges before offering it to your youngest group.
  3. 3
Set up using the Educator Setup GuideFollow the numbered steps for the activity, then use the focus list for your age group to decide what to watch for.
  4. 4
Send the Family UpdateCopy the paragraph for your age group into your daily report or parent message and adjust it to what the children actually did.

Tips from operators

What centers that use this well do differently

Learned the hard way across 3,000 child care spaces — and from the directors and educators who join our Lunch & Learns and Learning Labs.

Collect with the children

A walk to gather leaves, sticks and pinecones is an activity in its own right and gives children a reason to care about what goes in the bin.

Rotate the materials

The setup guide says to rotate materials to maintain interest. Swap one or two items at a time instead of changing the whole bin.

Pair it with observation notes

The focus lists — sorting, classification, planning, collaboration — give you ready vocabulary for the observations you write afterwards.

Read more FAQs
What ages is it for?

The adaptations cover three groups: 12–18 months, 19 months–under 3 years and 3–4 years. There is nothing specific for infants under 12 months or for children over 4.

Do I need to have attended the Learning Lab session?

No. The guide is labelled Session 3 of the Explore • Create • Build series, but each activity’s purpose and setup steps are written out so it can be used on its own.

Why do the page numbers say “of 11” when there are 7 pages?

The footer on each page reads 1/11 to 7/11, but the PDF has seven pages and the content is complete: all three activities and all three age groups are covered.

Is there a Family Update for every age group?

Almost. The 12–18 months adaptation of Nature Mark Making has a focus list but no Family Update, so write your own for that group. The other eight have one.
