What’s inside

Five pages on environments that work for children and staff

  • Why the environment mattersThe environment as the “third teacher”, and how a cluttered or poorly organized space affects behavior and engagement.
  • Practical examples: environment in actionDramatic play, outdoor play and creative/art areas — each with common challenges, improvements and the impact on children.
  • Calming cornersWhy they support emotional regulation, and how to create one: where to put it, how to define the space and what to stock it with.
  • Routines & visual schedulesWhy predictability helps, and how to use picture-and-word schedules at children’s eye level.
  • Pulling it all togetherA one-page summary of how environment, calming corners and routines combine across the program.

How to use it

Four steps to put it to work this week

  1. 1
Read the guide with your room leadsIt is five pages of bullet points — short enough to go through together at a staff meeting.
  2. 2
Compare each area to the examplesWalk your dramatic play, outdoor and art areas and note which of the listed challenges you recognise.
  3. 3
Pick one improvement per areaRotate a dramatic-play theme, add loose parts outdoors or put out open-ended art materials before you buy anything large.
  4. 4
Set up a calming corner and a visual scheduleFollow the guide’s lists, model how the corner is used, and review the schedule with children at morning circle.

Tips from operators

What centers that use this well do differently

Learned the hard way across 3,000 child care spaces — and from the directors and educators who join our Lunch & Learns and Learning Labs.

Measure the noise

A free decibel app at 10:30 on a Tuesday will tell you which room needs soft surfaces.

Turn off half the lights

Overhead fluorescent light is the most common source of a ‘busy’ room. Lamps and daylight calm it.

Tour another center

Directors who visit two other programs a year design better rooms. Ask; most will say yes.

Do it digitally in ChildFriendly Pro

Kiosk sign-in with exact timestamps and provincial attendance exports

Parents check in with a PIN on the room tablet, staff see live ratios, and ChildFriendly Pro generates the monthly attendance record — including provincial subsidy formats — with no reconstruction.

  • Parent PIN kiosk with authorised-pickup photos
  • Live ratio board with amber warnings
  • Monthly attendance and subsidy exports per child

Who is this guide for?

Owners and directors reworking existing rooms, and room leads who want to improve their environment. It is practical rather than theoretical.

Does it cover licensing space requirements?

No. It does not cover square footage, ratios or other regulatory requirements. Use it alongside your provincial or state licensing standards.

Is it aligned to a pedagogy?

It uses the Reggio Emilia idea of the environment as the “third teacher”, but the suggestions — organised play areas, calming corners, visual schedules — work in any program.

Can I use it for a dayhome?

Yes. The guide is written for child care operators generally and has no separate dayhome section, but its suggestions for play areas, a calming corner and a visual schedule apply to a home-based program too.
