How to use it

Four steps to put it to work this week

  1. 1
Prepare before the interviewFill in the blanks for the ages you care for and your opening hours. Have your own scenarios ready for the supervision, multi-tasking and behaviour questions — the sheet prompts you to provide one but does not supply it.
  2. 2
Write notes under each questionUse the lined space as the candidate answers, in their own words where you can.
  3. 3
Take notes independently, then compareIf two people interview, give each a copy and compare notes afterwards.
  4. 4
Call references afterwardsAsk about guidance style and reliability specifically.

Tips from operators

What centers that use this well do differently

Learned the hard way across 3,000 child care spaces — and from the directors and educators who join our Lunch & Learns and Learning Labs.

Listen for the child’s point of view

Strong candidates explain behaviour from the child’s side (‘she was tired and the room was loud’) rather than labelling it.

Watch how they enter play

Do they hover, direct, or join at the child’s level? That habit is very hard to train.

Keep the completed sheets

Completed interview notes are your record if a hiring decision is ever questioned, and useful if the candidate applies again.

Read more FAQs
Is a working interview allowed?

Yes in most places, provided the candidate has cleared a criminal record check or is never left alone with children and is supervised throughout. Check your licensing rules; many centers do the floor visit after the clearance comes back.

How many questions should I ask?

The sheet has 20. For a 45-minute interview, pick eight to ten and keep the active supervision, behaviour guidance and parent communication questions.

What is a red flag in an educator interview?

Language that blames children (‘he’s just a bad kid’), no examples from real practice, or discomfort with the question about raising a negative behaviour with a parent. Note these in the space under the question.

Can I use this for assistant roles?

Yes — skip the question about program activities and lean on the teamwork, supervision and guidance questions.
