Tips from operators

What centers that use this well do differently

Learned the hard way across 3,000 child care spaces — and from the directors and educators who join our Lunch & Learns and Learning Labs.

Protect breaks before anything else

Missed breaks are the most common — and most fixable — driver of burnout. Ratio-aware floater scheduling solves most of it.

Look at the calendar, not just the person

Hard months cluster around licensing visits, September intake and staff illness. Plan cover for them.

Recognition costs nothing

Specific, public praise for a small thing beats a generic staff-appreciation week.

How often should I revisit the checklist?

The checklist itself suggests a monthly team meeting for the gratitude board and quarterly check-ins on development goals. Going back over the whole list once a term is a reasonable rhythm.

Is this a performance review?

No. It is a list of things the center does for its team, not an assessment of any individual. Keep the growth-plan check-ins separate from the annual self-evaluation.

What numbers show whether it is working?

Overtime hours, missed or short breaks, sick days, and ratio warnings by room. If your scheduling software tracks these, export them monthly — in ChildFriendly Pro they are on the staff dashboard.

What if someone is clearly struggling?

Act the same week: adjust their schedule, add cover, and point them to your employee-assistance or other support resources. Follow up the next week, not next month.
