What’s inside

Five steps toward one change over the next 30 days

  • Step 1: Identify Your Current RealityTwo questions: ‘What is creating the most daily stress in your program right now?’ — with the note to think about repeated issues, not one-time problems — and ‘Where do you feel most pulled into the day-to-day?’
  • Step 2: Choose Your Focus AreaSelect ONE of four areas for the next 30 days: mentorship and staff support, delegation and shared responsibility, staff competency and training, or daily operations and consistency. Then answer ‘Why did you choose this area?’
  • Step 3: Define One Change You Will ImplementAsks for one simple, realistic change you can start this week, with the example “I will do a 5-minute weekly check-in with each staff”, and a ‘Your action’ prompt.
  • Step 4: Identify One Person to DevelopA Name line for one staff member, followed by ‘What is one strength they have?’ and ‘What is one area you want to grow in them?’
  • Step 5: Measure ProgressAsks ‘What will improve if this is working?’, lists three examples — fewer interruptions, staff asking fewer questions, more consistency in routines — and ends with a ‘Your success indicator’ line.

How to use it

Four steps to put it to work this week

  1. 1
Answer Step 1 honestlyWrite the repeated problem, not the most recent one. If the same interruption happens every day at the same time, that is the one to name.
  2. 2
Choose one focus area onlyThe worksheet says to select ONE of the four areas. Mark it and write your reason underneath.
  3. 3
Commit to a change you can start this weekKeep it as small as the worksheet’s own example, a five-minute weekly check-in. Write it as ‘I will…’ so it is clear who does what.
  4. 4
Review after 30 daysGo back to the success indicator you wrote in Step 5 and check whether it has moved. Then keep the change, adjust it or complete a new copy.

Tips from operators

What centers that use this well do differently

Learned the hard way across 3,000 child care spaces — and from the directors and educators who join our Lunch & Learns and Learning Labs.

Write the dates on it

The worksheet has no date line. Add the start date and the 30-day review date at the top so the plan has an end point.

It works in any season

Apart from the title, nothing in the five steps is tied to spring. Use it whenever the program needs a reset, such as after a staffing change or before a new intake.

Plan for extra writing space

The prompts are closely spaced, with little room beneath each question. Write longer answers on a separate sheet and keep the worksheet as the summary.

Read more FAQs
Is this a cleaning or classroom reset checklist?

No. Despite the name, it is a leadership planning worksheet. It is about reducing stress and improving team stability through one change in how you support staff, delegate, train or run daily operations.

How long does it take to complete?

The worksheet does not give a time. It has five steps and about ten short written answers, and the plan itself runs for 30 days.

Can I fill it in on a computer?

It is a print-and-handwrite PDF with no fillable fields, laid out on A4. If you print on US Letter, choose ‘fit to page’.

What should I use alongside it?

The example change in Step 3 is a weekly staff check-in, and the Weekly Staff Check-In Tool gives a one-page structure for those conversations. For the delegation focus area, the Micro-Leadership Roles Resource helps you define a role to hand over.
